Engineering News STALFORMIn construction of the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD) in St. Petersburg, was completed concreting of all piers of Double-Deck Bridge across the Sea Canal. In order to reduce construction time, STALFORM Int had expediently manufactured, and delivered to the construction site located at Kanonersky Island, an extra set of all-metal formwork for the piers caps.
Currently, at the unique construction of the bridge over the main ship channel is in full swing carried out incremental launching of double-deck spans. Already in August of 2016 the high-speed highway should be put into active operation.
The Doubl-Deck Bridge at the intersection with the main ship channel of St. Petersburg — the Sea Channel, is one of the most complex and interesting, from the engineering point of view, projects of the WHSD. The under bridge clearance is 52 m, which is considerably greater than the height of any navigable spans of any existing, or under construction, bridges of the Northern capital. The oncoming traffic flows are separated into two tiers — one above the other. Two — deck 10m-high and weighing 20 thousand tons metal girders of the spans are set up by using the up-to-date incremental launching method. At that are used two types of incremental launching: straight longitudinal and upwards with changed radius. In order to fulfill this unprecedented task, of great importance is precision of assembly of the metal girders and exact compliance with the designed geometry of the pier caps.
Designers and engineers of STALFORM Int had designed a special, all-metal formwork system for concreting the caps of piers of the bridge over the Sea Channel. Considering the huge size and complex configuration of caps, as well as high requirements for precision and quality, we can say with confidence that the solution provided to the contractor — international company Astaldi — IC Içtaş, had reduced time spent on formwork application of high complexity.
Today, one of the main tasks of the WHSD construction workers, is to keep within the tight schedule of work: in compliance with decision of the City Investment Committee, all three segments of the highway have to start working in August 2016, as one integrated transport system. The unfinished central section of the West High-Speed Road, is the most difficult, because most of it passes through bridges and overpasses. Currently, almost at all sites of the central section, assembly and installation of formwork portion is in progress. However, the pace of work is greatly affected by severe weather conditions — low temperatures, high wind loads. Another characteristic feature of the central part of the WHSD — curves in the route, both in profile, and in plan.
We wish to mention, that at the end of 2015, STALFORM Int had supplied for construction of the WHSD, an innovative adaptive system of frame — canvass shelters for concreting superstructure spans with variable geometry. According to the company’s information service information, the construction shelters withstood the gale, the rate of which in St. Petersburg at the end of January reached 20 m /sec
